Research-Backed Applications
Early-stage human research has explored naringenin supplementation in liver health, cardiovascular risk markers and metabolic regulation.
About Naringenin
Naringenin is a naturally occurring citrus flavanone found in grapefruit and other citrus fruits. As a member of the flavonoid family, naringenin has attracted scientific interest for its antioxidant activity and its potential role in lipid metabolism, glucose regulation, inflammatory signaling and cardiovascular function.
Research on naringenin has progressed from laboratory and animal studies to human investigations examining metabolic and cardiovascular health markers. Published studies have explored its effects on liver fat-related parameters, blood lipid profiles and indicators associated with cardiovascular risk. Early research has also investigated its potential influence on insulin resistance and energy metabolism, although the strength of evidence varies considerably across these applications.
Health Benefits
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated 200 mg of naringenin daily for four weeks in 44 overweight or obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Compared with placebo, the study reported improvements in hepatic steatosis grade and in lipid markers, including triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL-C, alongside an increase in HDL-C. No significant between-group differences were observed in liver enzymes (ALT, AST) or the NAFLD fibrosis score.
International Journal of Clinical Practice 2021, 75(11), e14852.
A further report from the same 44-patient trial, published in 2022, examined cardiovascular risk factors after four weeks of naringenin supplementation in overweight or obese patients with NAFLD. Compared with placebo, the naringenin group showed reductions in the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), non-HDL-C, and the TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C and non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratios. BMI and visceral fat level were also lower. The authors described the study as a pilot trial.
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology 2022, 34(3), 345–353.
A published case study explored naringenin supplementation (150 mg three times daily, from an orange extract) in one individual with untreated diabetes over eight weeks. The report described a 17.6% decrease in HOMA-IR, a 2.3 kg reduction in body weight and a resting metabolic rate that peaked about 3.5% above baseline one hour after dosing, while the participant maintained her usual food intake. No adverse events were reported. As a single-subject case study, these results are preliminary and cannot establish efficacy.
Journal of Medicinal Food 2020, 23(3), 343–348.
Naringenin has been investigated for its antioxidant activity and its influence on biological pathways associated with oxidative stress. Preclinical research suggests that it may modulate antioxidant defense systems and related cellular signaling pathways.
This research supports continued exploration of naringenin in antioxidant-focused nutritional formulations.
