About Fisetin
Fisetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid, a type of plant polyphenol found in various fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, apples, persimmons, and onions. In recent years, it has gained significant attention in dermatology and skincare for its potent biological activities and promising benefits for skin health.
Fisetin targets several fundamental processes of skin aging and damage. Its unique combination of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and particularly senolytic properties makes it a promising ingredient in advanced skincare formulations aimed at promoting longevity, resilience, and a youthful appearance of the skin.
Health Benefits
In 2024, Professor Kento’s team at Keio University in Japan discovered that fisetin can selectively eliminate approximately 66% of senescent dermal fibroblasts and suppress the secretion of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). These effects help improve overall skin condition and slow down the skin-aging process.
At the same time, fisetin was shown to increase collagen density by 41.2%, improving visible signs of aging such as wrinkles and skin laxity.
Biogerontology. 2024 Feb;25(1):161-175.
Fisetin effectively suppresses MMP-1 and MMP-3, reducing matrix-degrading enzymes and protecting dermal collagen and elastic fibers from senescent cell–derived damage, helping maintain skin structural integrity.

As a potent antioxidant, fisetin exhibits strong anti-inflammatory activity and can directly neutralize ROS in the dermis, such as superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals.
It also effectively inhibits UV-induced ROS production, reducing DNA damage in skin cells and alleviating sun-induced inflammation, fine lines, and skin damage.
J. Mol. Sci. 2023, 24, 17358.
Fisetin significantly suppresses the expression of inflammatory mediators (NO, PGE2, IL-1β, IL-6) and key enzymes (iNOS, COX-2), while blocking NF-κB activation and inhibiting mTOR activity.
It shows promising effects in improving various skin inflammatory conditions, including atopic dermatitis, urticaria, and psoriasis-like skin inflammation.
