About Apigenin
Apigenin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in chamomile, parsley, celery and other plants. It has attracted scientific interest for its antioxidant properties and potential roles in NAD⁺ metabolism, sleep regulation and metabolic health.
Research has identified apigenin as a potential inhibitor of CD38, an enzyme involved in NAD⁺ degradation. Preclinical studies have also explored its effects on GABA-related signaling, glucose regulation and lipid metabolism. These findings make apigenin an interesting ingredient for healthy aging and wellness formulations, although further human clinical trials are needed to confirm its benefits.
Health Benefits
Apigenin has been identified as a potential CD38 inhibitor. Cell and animal studies suggest that it may help preserve NAD⁺ levels and influence pathways involved in cellular metabolism and healthy aging.
Diabetes 2013, 62(4), 1084–1093.
Animal research suggests that apigenin may influence GABA-related signaling involved in sleep regulation. Human research on chamomile extract has explored sleep outcomes, but evidence for isolated apigenin remains limited.
Archives of Pharmacal Research 2012, 35, 367–373.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 57 patients with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder, chamomile extract produced a modestly greater reduction in anxiety scores (HAM-A) than placebo over eight weeks. As chamomile contains multiple bioactive compounds, these findings cannot establish the effects of isolated apigenin.
Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology 2009, 29(4), 378–382.
In high-fat-diet-induced obese mice, apigenin supplementation improved several metabolic parameters related to glucose and lipid regulation. Further human research is needed to determine whether these effects translate into meaningful benefits in people.
